External HD for laptop.....What works?

I'm at college now and I have both my desktop and laptop with me. I'm thinking about brining my desktop home over Christmas break, leaving it there, and only keeping my laptop here. The problem is, I have 30+ gigs of stuff that I want on my desktop HD. What are my options for external hard drive hookups? And keep in mind I am a college student with a limited budget.

Thanks all!

The cheapest bet would be to make an external usb drive. It'll be slow, but it'll be a lot less expensive than an external firewire drive.

I agree 🙂

But fire wire would be the best... Maxtor make great ones.

firewire isn't really that much more expensive. a lot of laptops have it built in now too. but a firewire cards for al aptop is like $40, and $30 for a desktop. the casings are only a bit more. so maybe $50 more at worst.

i have a usb 2.5" enclosure that i use, but thats only because its easier for me to take things to other people's machines, since most computers dont have firewire
