External HD Enclosures

I'm sure they're perfectly safe to use, but there is still this nagging feeling that whenever I turn off the enclosure, I'm harming the HD inside...sorta like when you just unplug the computer without shutting it down properly.

So are there really any fears about using HD enclosures? I do use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in XP, so should that be fine?

Not at all. Turning off a hard drive has essentially no effect on it. Heads are auto parked. The reason for the Windows shutdown procedure is not hardware - it is so the OS can put things away. With NTFS, that really is not a big problem because XP will clean all that up on the next power up without batting an eye.

If you have write caching turned off for external devices, you don't need to bother with "Safely Remove Hardware."
