My friend has a Dell laptop and is looking for a decent external hard drive

What do you guys suggest? What are "top brands" ... and speeds I guess (although the speed wouldnt be real important since its external and for storage of stuff like mp3)

Or you can buy one of the external enclosure, and throw in a standard 3.5 inch HD.
Search for 'bytecc' at newegg.
the enclosure is about $30 to $35, a HD is about $60 - $80 depending on size.

I use an enclosure to hook up to my DVD burner, works great.

If you want something really slim and fancy, go for the 2.5 inch enclosure and throw in a laptop HD =)

I like this method (OEM HD + External Case) as well because the HD's are interchangable and Seagates now have 5yr warranty's, other OEMs can be had with 3yrs and most of the ready made one's come with 1 yr. Also you can them with dual configs ( Firewire and USB Hi-Speed)
