External Hard Drive won't work on USB

It worked perfectly fine until a friend of mine plugged the USB into his laptop. It worked initially until he rebooted and the hard disk stopped showing up. Then I tried plugging the disk into my Desktop with firewire and it worked fine. I thought it might've been the USB cable to blame which was quite old.

Then I took the Hard disk to another friends place and tried plugging it in into his laptop with another USB cable and it did not show up.

Any idea what's causing the problem? It's a Seagate Pushbutton 750GB.

As obvious as it is, bad controller board. The board that converts SATA to USB and Firewire, the USB portion has gone bad.
