Hi,
Im trying to build a External Drive for the first time with the following materials, but I cant get it to work...

Materials:
Seagate 500GB Barricuda

AMS Venus DS5 - Firewire/USB2

Basically I install the HDD and the external case shows up under the device manager but the HDD never shows up on "my computer" so I can't format it, etc.

I know the problem isn't the enclosure because I put a DVD drive in the enclosure and the DVD drive worked just fine.

I also tried the HDD in another enclosure and got the same result.
I have tried connecting both by USB and by firewire. And I have tried connecting to two different computers.

I did move the jumper pin so that its set on the first pins (closest to the IDE cable). Am I missing anything? This should be just straightforward plug and play right?

Does this mean I just have a bad hard drive??????

Help please

Is this a new hard drive? Put it back into the enclosure then plug the enclosure back in. Then right click on "My Computer", click on "Manage" then click on "Disk Management" under "Storage" on the pane in the left side of the window. Windows might need to initialize the drive.

Many enclosures can't deal with drives that large. You may have to pre-partition and format it connected directly to the computer. If the docs that came with the enclosure doesn't tell you how to deal with a large drive, call AMS.

If it won't read it, connect it to the PC via SATA and use Seagate's handy scan and format tool. There you can choose the partition sizes, and how you want it formated.
