Hey all,

I'm curious. Will Win 98 be able to read data from a USB 2 external hard drive that is formatted using NTFS?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, no. Not over a direct USB connection via 98/98SE. A FAT variant would be the preferred choice for accessibility under 98/98SE.

The files would however be accessible under 98SE if accessed via a network connection to an Xp/2000 machine, if the enclosure was connected to said Xp/2000 machine. The type of file system is inconsequential over a network connection.

As an aside, may help connectivity to have the netbeui protocol installed on both machines if the above suggestion is attempted.

Thanks for the verification!

I had a feeling it wouldn't work, too, but I just wasn't sure. Actually, I think I will go with a FAT partition since the drive will be transported back and forth between Win98 and XP machines. The network option wouldn't work in this setup, though, since both machines will be at least 100 miles apart.
