External Hard Drive Noise - Normal?

Hey. I just bought a hard drive for my external enclosure, and the hard drive makes a metal "grinding" sound when it works (rotating). It isn't that loud (so not that annoying), but it is definitely audible.

I'm wondering if the noise is normal and I just can't hear it when it's inside a desktop or whether my hard drive might be too tight/too loose in the enclosure. I didn't notice it with other externals I have used in the past.

I have a Mapower KC31 exclosure (basic 3.5" USB/Firewire combo). Hard drive: Western Digital IDE 200GB.

Thanks!

It seems like this the sound you're hearing may be the drive vibrating against the case housing. Surely, the drive itself can not be making a metal "grinding" sound. Maybe you need to open the case and make sure the drive is securely mounted inside.

I'm pretty sure what I hear is the hard drive spinning - not so much of a grinding sound. I think it is normal now because it only seemed to occur when I first put in the hard drive. I think it was running faster - now there isn't much sound anymore.

Thanks for any looks/comments.

Try setting the drive on an old mouse pad - the foam type. It works for me. 🙂
