I have a Seagate Freeagent MSeries 500gb external hard drive.

While I was pulling files onto my notebook, I shifted the laptop and the usb cord tugged the drive and caused it to tip over onto its side. I heard a loud spinning sound and removed power.

When I plugged it back it, it's yellow light flickered on and the drive began to spin. I heard a whir and a low electronic beep, followed by another half second of whirring and another beep.
This continues until I remove power.

I figure the small impact caused one of the heads to become lodged between platters.

Any ideas?

An external HD should be used in a horizontal attitude, as you found out.
Time to start reading external drive reviews. ;)
