Need some guidance on external hard drives.
Heres the situation. Ive got 4 computers and one laptop, to backup.
Some machines are running win98se some are winXP, some are usb1.1 some are 2.0.
2 computers are at one location, the other 2 are at another location, with the laptop being in transit or at one of the locations.

I want to back up everything on all computers. Im getting tired of the cd/switch a roo. Which disk is this on, and where is this disk, if its not here its there, and what machine is this for, crap.

So ive been checking out the Extrenal hard drives at b.b, and also reading about building your own. Im a little lost, confused as to what I should do, what i should get.

I read that some external drives use internal power supplies, some use external power supplies. I was told that the 200 gig maxtor at best buy, alows you to lock the drive so no one can get to your data, also when you plug it into each machine it knows what machine its connected to and copies the data to that section of the external drive. The drawback I guess being the external powersupply and having to constantly plug and unplug from under the desk. Dont know what the drawback would be to a internal powersupply.

and as far as building my own, dont know if you get all that with building your own.
So whats the best route for me to take, I figured last night looking at newegg that a enclosure is around 30.00 could get a drive for around 70.00. So thats 100.00 vs the 180.00 from b.b, but then i would need software right?

Educate me on external hard drives and what would be best, build my own or buy complete. If you suggest building one, what should i be looking for in the enclosure as far as specs..

Thanks for the help
