external hard drive for gaming

will putting my games on an external hard drive and played them off that be fast enough? or will the hd lag and mess up?

Firewire is faster than USB2.0.

What MoBo do you have? Some (like mine) have backplates with SATA and power connectors. You could use one of these, and attach a SATA drive to it. This way, it's external, but is actually connecting straight to your MoBo sata connections.

external hd's are painfully slow - they are best suited for backups or multimedia storage
sata or usb2.0 offer approximately the same speeds (480mb/s vs 400mb/s theoretical throughput) and the speed differences are negligible in the real world.

Why do you not want to use an internal hard drive?

Not really... Firewire400 and USB2 external HDs are slow, but anything above that is plenty fast.
