Hey everyone,

I just got a new external hard drive enclosure, it was a cheap $25 from newegg Syba enclosure. I installed a 300GB IDE drive that had previously been in my computer and works fine. However, now when its in the external enclosure it will be working fine, but every minute or two it makes a sound like it stops spinning, and it loses its connection to my computer at the same time. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Kevin

Must be because those enclosures are meant for backups, not continuous operation, so it will spin the drive down to save power after a transfer. Is it USB? Maybe there's an option in the drivers.

Does the enclosure have its own power supply? If not, it will be erratic and keep doing what it is doing. There is not enough power in a USB port to drive a normal HDD.
