External Graphics Card?

Are there external graphics solutions for notebooks? What I'm talking about is something with a PCI-E slot and you can plug that into some sort of box and then that box connects to your laptop using a PCMCIA or USB slot? I know of the ASUS XG station but that goes into the Express slot and it costs like $500 dollars.
