External DVD writer not detected

The device: Sony DRX-820U.

The problem: This device is not detected under Windows XP. It worked a while back, not sure what changed.

Attempts: I went into the device manager and checked out the "unknown" device, it reports no driver found. I downloaded the firmware for this device, but it wouldn't install because it couldn't detect it.

Any ideas? I no longer have the CD that came with it.

Is it detected by your BIOS but not Windows?

Actually, I don't think it is. The BIOS gave me a list of devices to boot from and I put the USB CD ROM first, hard drive second, and it wouldn't boot my LiveCD.

Check your connections then. ime, when the BIOS isn't detecting a drive it's usually a hardware issue.

Edit: To add to that...if the connections are OK then it's likely your Sony is FUBAR.
