Does such a thing exist? And if so, does it play the games? I am asking because my internal one broke and I dont want to send it in or try to fix it.

Yes. The HD-DVD external drive plays DVDs

No it will not play the game DVDs. So you CANNOT use it as a replacement for the internal DVD drive.

What about the HD-DVD add-on? I have one but I've never tried to game from it. Sure would be an expensive workaround though.

No, the drive has custom firmware for DRM / copy-protection and must be internal.

Hacking sites might give you enough info to mod some non-360 drive to work internally but you'd still need to crack open your case and void your warranty.

If you're past the 1-year warranty the cost for MS to repair the drive is usually about $100.

I'd say just pay the $100 for MS to fix it.

I replaced my laser for about $20, but had to void the warranty and my xbox promptly red ringed two months later.

There is no way to get a non-360 drive to work with the 360. You can use a different 360 drive, but not a regular DVD drive.

Also, sent you a PM OP ;)
