External Dual Layer DVD Burner issue;

I am trying to backup a DVD using CloneDVD2, DVD Regionfree, and my new MadDog MegaSTOR MD-8XDVD9-EXT external DL DVD Burner.

I have RiDATA DL DVD+R disks and cannot get the drive to recognize them. Someone mentioned firware upgrade, but where do I get the upgrade and how do you upgrade firmware on an external device??
