external drive?

My dad is considering buying a 400gb external drive for $400 at compusa! He wants to buy it today, and I told him to give me a few hours before he made the purchase because I'd like to help save a little money.

My questions:

Isn't there a better option? Like buying an internal drive and an enclosure + usb 2.0 converter?

If we go this route, are there any disadvantages?

Alot of times, you can buy an external enclosure and a drive to go in it for less money. That's usually what I do. I don't see the need to spend that kind of money just for an already enclosed drive.
