External drive, speed and cache.

So I do some video editing. I need to move big files around and possibly work off of an external 2.5" hard drive.

I'm guessing 7200 is better than 5400 in the laptop and 16mb/s is better than 8mb/s for these purposes.

Does it make any difference if the hard drive is in an external USB enclosure? Or is the USB interface not fast enough to use anything better than 5400 8mb/s

Or does it depend on the enclosure?

Thanks guys and gals.
