External drive not detected by my desktop..?

My external drive in a nexstar 3 is not detected my my desktop. This is a recent problem. However it is detected by my laptop but when i connect the USB to my desktop i get the double tone rather than the single tone to indicate it is detected. I checked that the USB port on my desktop is working properly by plugging my printer into the USB ports to see if is detected..and it is. So i am at a loss as to what has happened to my nexstar 3. Why does it work in my laptop but not my desktop? thank you.

Problem may be that it is just not getting a drive letter.

absolutely right..i fixed the drive letter and all is well. Thanks for the very good technical comment.
