External Drive connected to two systems?

Just curious... Currently have a 250gb Maxtor in an external enclosure hooked up via FW to my Mac Mini.

The enclosure also supports USB 2.0, so is it possible to connect the drive up via USB 2.0 to a PC and have the files accessable to both systems at the same time?

connect the drive via USB to the PC, and create a network share. have the mac access the drive through the network.

you cannot connect the drive via USB to both systems and have both access the drive at the same time.

Could 2 different formats be a problem? If its text files, no problem, but otherwise......

Short of programs, nearly every other file is compatable between the two operating systems...

JPG, NEF, XLS, DOC, MPEG, AVI, the list is endless.

Why ask, and just do it? 😛 If it doesn't work (which I'm fairly certain it will), then you have your answer.

Unfortunately both systems are wireless and i would prefer the speed of a direct connection rather than sharing the files over my G network. Most of what i'll be acessing off the drive is my NEF's (+5mb per file).

I have to dig in my closet for an A-B USB cable so i thought i would ask before i began my expedition.

Yes, I stand corrected. I was thinking of programs.

Actually, text files are formatted different on Macs and PCs, so in effect, they are the ONLY thing that would have problems. 🙂

You could also create a network directly between the 2 computers in the same room with a crossover cable, or a regular ethernet cable if one of the computers can auto crossover.
