External Drive: Cannot access it. Causes PC to lock up.

I had done something to my PC causing the external hard drive to change its SID. However, during this process the installation failed. I restarted my PC and the system no longer loaded into Windows (XP), it freezes at the blue welcome screen. If the connection between the external hard drive and the main (C) drive are cut via the USB cable, the system quickly boots to desktop.

With the external drive connected, Safemode will not boot ether. Also, if the PC is already loaded into Windows and the drive is connected via the USB cable, the system becomes pretty unstable. Most windows will not load, nore will the drive appear as a drive in "My Computer".

I tried running the SID changing program again while the external was connected so it would possibly fix the corrupted drive, but the installation program froze during the installation process. If I cannot access the drive and all data is lost, I would like to at least delete and clear it so I can use it again. I tried using the WindowsXP disk to boot @ startup so I could format the partition, and even that froze when the drive was connected... (and it also quickly worked once the drive was removed).

Is there anything I can do? Thanks 🙂

I had this issue, but fixed it by removing it from the enclosure and mounting it into the computer (direct SATA connect) then running checkdisk.
