I need to buy a friend an external CD-RW drive for his Macintosh G3. His computer has 2 USB connections but no FireWire. From what I have gathered, if you use USB, you are stuck with a 4x burner or slower. FireWire would boost this to 8x or faster. However, I've been budgeted $150 for the drive. That doesn't seem enough for both a drive and FireWire add-on card. What brand/models should I consider?
Mac ownership is a sentence to excessive expense. You can buy a 24x IDE burner for a PC for $80, but a slow external (hence, Mac-compatible) burner will cost nearly twice the price.
