External CD-RW to External HD???

A long time ago I used to have an external MicroSolutions Backpack CDRW (4/4/20). Eventually, I ripped the CD drive out of the external enclosure and just threw it into my system. I have long since replaced that CDRW and the old enclosure has just been collecting dust. So last night, I'm rummaging through the closet and I come across the old enclosure and a spare 20GB HD I'm not using. Then I get the bright idea to throw the HD in there and make myself a portable 20GB HD. Everything is hooked up right and I downloaded/installed XP drivers for the enlosure chipset but my system goes into blue screen whenever I try to boot with my "creation" installed.

The enclosure connects via a parallel port. Could that be the problem? I would think that the chipset on the enclosure is simply a IDE to parallel adapter and should not care what sort of device is hooked up to it.

Feel free to let me know if I'm wasting my time trying to figure this out 😉

Thanks

I did this to my cdrw (4/4/24) and put in a 30G, as well, the hard drive powered up perfectly but my system just didn't see it. I think its the enclosure, micro-solutions makes large capacity ext. parallel drives so it would look like its box and the fact its cd-intended, maybe it doesn't have quite enough of the wattage to power hard drives.
