I'm looking for an external firewire CD-RW. I want to get one to replace my current Plextor 16x internal, which I want to give to my parents. The reason I'm looking for firewire is that I would be able to use it with both my desktop and laptop. I have been looking around, and found some good prices on some (from La Cie, Piranha Technology, and others), but I'm not too sure of company reputation/quality/support. Any info from anyone with any experience with external firewire drives would be appreciated.

Get an external Firewire 5.25 inch enclosure from compgeeks.com, and put any IDE drive into it. Just make sure you don't overpay for some retail drive at CompUSA or something; buy online. Save you 70 bucks or so. Just as reliable as any pre-built system, since they all use the same brands of drives anyway.

I just checked, but can't seem to find a 5.25" external on compgeeks. Any other places to look?

Model ME-320F
Model ME-320U2F has both Firewire and USB2.0 in case you'd ever want that.

Comp-Geek's search and sorting aren't that great.

You do know you'll have to use a power cord for the drive, right?

Thanks everyone. I do realize I need to power the drive externally. I was just a bit lazy looking on the site. I'll check around some more. Thanks again.

That's what I use and works like a charm. I got that one cause eventhough I use the Firewire when I take the drive to Clients Puters the usually have USB 1.0...although slow it saves alot of time installing esp if they are on dial-up and need updating
