I need to upgrade to a larger external drive (current one is only 640gb). I would like it to be USB 3.0 and 2tb or larger in size because I would like to backup images of my 1tb data drive and 256gb C: drive onto it.

Are there any good network type devices out now that could also serve as a server for movies and Itunes to my PS3, ipads, laptop and Iphone as well?

Any advice on either of these?

[I'm in the US and would probably like to purchase from amazon.com due to excellent return policy. I'm also interested in purchasing from Costco for the same reason. Newegg would be ok too, but return policy not great IMHO.]

After doing some research, it looks like I am going to try the WD My Book Live in 2 tb or 3tb flavor. Does anyone here have any experiences with this drive? Is there something else I should consider?

I use 2 of these for my local/external backups :

otherwise, I have 6 of those 2TB Samsung drives for day to day storage...amazing little drives.

I just have a robocopy script I run once or twice a month and back up to those 3TB drives, and put in a fire safe.

Here's my Windows 7 HTPC/NAS :

You posted a 4MB, 3k x 4k file hosted on some colo server. Please shrink the thing. :) Takes forever.

I'm all about some redundancy. I've seen so many of those USB drives fail. The drive itself is usually OK, just the USB controller on the thing sucks.

I'd go for a small tower and throw in some large drives and make it a RAID 10.

Antec 300 case, holds 6 drives easily...can probably mod it for more :).

Pffft, I love unneutered files! AT resizes/thumbnails it anyhow.

I know...it's just that initial load. London to Chicago over the internet...not the best latency ever. :)

I have a similar setup as you, though I'm doing as above. 4x 1TB in a 10 array. Just shy of 2TB and suprisingly sufficient for now, but I've not started to archive movies, mostly audio for the moment.

The only thing I'm wary of with single USB drives, if you're not careful, you'll end up with a plethora of them and you'll find all kinds of duplicates on them. Good organization is the key.
