External AGP box?

Steve

One of the guys upstairs told a co-worker and I about an unusual product he'd heard about, an external graphics box that had SiS Xabre graphics (unsure whether it was on a removeable card). Apparently it only connected by USB, and acted as a convenient, portable extra display unit. Obviously it would go well with laptops, but we're trying to find out more information on it. What would something like this use or need to be usingin order to work properly? Any theories, ideas, or facts are appreciated.

Did it contain a display too or just a VGA card? Most laptops already have a VGA out and so you can just grab any extra monitor and hook it up to the laptop. I don't see where's the market for such an item.

o, the electornics are just the lcd controller, not anything that does grapical calculations like agp cards

Apparently it had only the VGA hardware in it. The idea was that you could use it for more video power than what a laptop had....however somebody yesterday said it may have just been an external USB TV tuner, which is a completely different thing 😀

A USB has nowhere near enough bandwidth to run a 3D accelerator off of. I have, however seen USB TV tuners. That's probably what it was.

They do, apparently, exist. Seems like a cute idea which, like many cute ideas, may not actually be all that good. See a Picture. This seems to be the closest thing to a manufacturer's website on the subject.

Unless it is directly interfaced with the north-bridge, you cannot call it 'an AGP'. And besides there is a limit to how long the bus wires are, so its highly impossible to have an AGP box as what you mentioned. What Phisrow is talking about it something like a PCI card, albeit that it is interfaced via a USB bus.
