External 5.25 floppy disk drive?

I can't seem to find an external 5.25 floppy disk drive that connects via USB. I have found empty external drives with IDE inside. Will a standard 5.25" floppy drive work in these types of enclosures connected via USB? I have an old commodore 64 that I want to mess around and do a little programming with.

Nope. Floppies had their own connector, not IDE.

You'll have better luck building a classic box with any motherboard old enough to still have a floppy connector on it (it's a bit smaller than IDE) or using a serial/parallel port unit if you can actually find one. (The internal route may well end up being cheaper than finding an external 5.25" of ANY kind!!) :D

Thanks. Sorry, yes I ment a floppy drive cable, not IDE cable =) Was thinking of getting one of these, taking the cd drive out and throwing a floppy in. Was not sure if that would work or not?

Cool little project. Thanks for posting the links. One draw back I did see is it looks like the FC5025 is read-only.
Not sure if that makes a difference but you did mention something about maybe doing some light coding on your Commodore.

Yes, read only is a drawback. Another thing you can do is get an old 286/386/486 with a 5.25" drive in it, or put one in. It may even cost cheaper. Not sure if messing with the commodore worths it.
