I've noticed this in the Chrome app store. Companies like Firefox seem to be on top of their app store (they have less apps, maybe better vetting before it being available).
The takeaway is to make sure you know the extension is legit before downloading it (and it's tough to spot sometimes like the story mentions) in the Chrome Store.
For example, I've been using this extension for a while now, and it is one of the apps they refer to in the article (and it shows 10+ million of users): https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cyber...on-ublock-origin-app-spotted-on-chrome-store/
Edit: It appears the Ublock Orgin extension I used was legit. The version they mention in the Malwarebytes article was removed.
