Extensions in Chrome

The gist is that extensions are enabled if you're on the developer branch of Google Chrome. Support right now is fairly limited, but the only one I'm really interested in is the adblocker, which seems to work perfectly. I also tried the Cleeki extension, but found it too obtrusive in my browsing. YMMV.

I've been a huge fan of Chrome since release so I'm stoked about this. Ad blocking was the only major feature I really missed from Firefox, and now my browsing is even faster. Especially here on AT where the ad servers triple my page load times.


For the lazy, step-by-step
1. Get onto the developer release branch, here . You can install this right over top of your existing Chrome install, and it's easy to roll back if something breaks (it never has for me).

2. Add the following to your Chrome shortcut target: --enable-extensions

3. Download your extensions! This is very easy, just a single click of a link with no browser restart required.

Don't think you need developer release branch for adsweep do you? I'm using adsweep with the latest official release.

Now if they could just get the google toolbar in chrome (for the online bookmark menu), that would be gravy.

Only thing with adsweep is that it still gets the ad, and shows it for a split second while it removes it.

It also doesn't remove ads in google reader.

Yes that's interesting, I just noticed that it does indeed still make the request to the ad server, so this AdSweep plugin won't decrease load times. This is very disappointing. Thanks for the tip regarding developer branch, I didn't realise that.

Didn't Google abandon the Google toolbar?

Just to clarify, Adsweep does work and work well, but it still loads the ads and then blocks them with Java Script. Adblock Plus stops the ads from loading altogether. I don't see a big issue with this personally because the ads are still removed from sight. But people with slow internet connections will notice right off the bat that pages load no faster with it enabled, like with Adblock Plus.

You can also install it on any version of Chrome manually. Just follow the instructions posted on the site the OP linked to.

@OP. You misspelled AdSweep in your URL link.

Now if Chrome would remember my zoom settings, I would probably switch from IE8 to Chrome. The only ads I want blocked are intellitxt and Kontera since these are obtrusive and block the content I am viewing when using the mouse pointer while reading. I just add them as a wildcard in the untrusted URL list and this works well on both Chrome and IE since both use the Internet Options built into Windows for that.

I strongly recommend people whitelist sites they frequent or donate funds so the sites can continue to operate. Adblocking will rob a legit site of much needed revenue. These sites cost money to run and they need to pay the bills and salaries of employees.

Thanks for the spelling correction. Yes I agree with you regarding whitelisting sites that you support, and I would do it in a second for Anandtech if they would just get rid of their animated banners. I really don't need flashing, animated banners assaulting my corneas on the website on which I spend the most.

Normally I wouldn't mine about the ads being loaded then not displayed, but on Anandtech it bothers me because quite frequently AT forum pages just won't load, it just sits there waiting for web servers with names like dynamic2.... or fmtpub... (or something), which are quite obviously ad servers. It's a huge pain. I used to solve this by redirecting these domains in my HOSTS file, but this doesn't seem to work in Windows 7. I haven't really put any effort into finding out why not.

That's my problem with ads. I don't mind seeing them one bit, but when laggy ad servers affect my browsing speed, they have to go.

This is why I don't use ad blockers. If it wasn't for ads the free Internet as we know it would not exist.

And I've never had a problem with AT forum pages not loading due to ads.

I think adblockers equals stealing. You block ads, you steal their server resources and bandwidth without giving anything back. Sites have been known to go under because they couldn't afford running it, or they have had to come up with alternate means of financing with various success. Now if people wouldn't be so stuck up with their ad blocking, sites wouldn't be having quite as much problem with much needed money they receive from displaying ads. People never cease to amaze me with their selfishness for the sake of their own convenience.

If it still loads the ads and the installation is not as seamless as Firefox then it's a no go for me. I just want to click 'extensions' and then click 'Add Adblock Plus' and then Chrome would be the best thing in the world for me- FF does this perfectly so that's what I'm sticking with. I hope by the end of the year Google has something like this.

I had to take out adsweep. For some websites it was removing the ad, but everything else on the page as well.

Well excuse me, but I decide what is loaded onto my computer and if website operators don't like it they can ban my IP address. An if you want to call me a thief (an insult I take personally) then you can go f yourself.

i'd have an easier time going along with this if they weren't all animated and eating system resources like mad..esp on older laptops/netbooks it makes things chug.

I am sorry but when you start adding sounds and annoying animation to the ad's it's your own fault when people block them.
