Extensions and themes not installing in Firefox

I reformatted again, but this time I saved the contents of C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox. I installed Firefox, copied the contents of that folder back in and fired it up. Most things are correct (tab progress bar looks different for some reason, but I digress).

I am trying to install some new themes and extensions, but I'm unable to. I click on the link and it just sits there. I try opening it in a new tab, and it asks to open or save the .jar or .xpl file. I choose open and point it to Firefox.exe. It then asks again, creating a cycle. If I save it to disk and open it with Firefox it does the same thing. I installed JRE 1.42 but this doesn't seem to affect it. It says the .jar file is corrupt. Any ideas?

this happened to me before. what you could do is just save the .xpi file and then open tools --> extensions and drag and drop the file. if you want a fix, then you have to delete your profile folder and lose your settings. i tried mozbackup and backed up my settings when i had this problem. i deleted the folder and restored settings and my problem was fixed, but my extensions weren't working. all other settings were still there though. so then i just reinstalled extensions and it was all good.
