Extending Wireless Range

We have a room over our garage that now needs internet. Our wireless network consists of a Linksys WRT54G (with upgraded antennas) in the living room and a Linksys WRE54G range extender about half way between the router and the bedroom that needs internet. There are four bars at the location of the range extender.

Currently the back room only gets an intermittent and poor signal. I am trying to figure out what to do? Someone suggested getting "homeplug", a device that sends an internet signal through the electrical wiring. Someone else suggested an 802.11n router. Thanks for the advice.

There is few way the deal with it.

No right or wrong, more a mater of prici and personal preference.

If Power line work you would need also a Powerline Wireless Bridge, otherwise you would not be able to use the Wireless of the laptop.

As for WDS it might be that a good Wireless Router doing WDS would do what the Linksys extender can not.

Since you have Linksys WRT54G, buy a WRT54GL flash both with DD-WRT firmware.

Using a Laptop loaded with Netstumbler, do a Wireless survey in the house, http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

According to the Netstumbler's signal strength reading, identify spots that have strong signal. and spot with weak, or No signal.

Evaluate how you can cover the space and start placing WDS units.

Additional Wireless Routers in WDS Mode (Wireless Network - Configuration Modes. ) has to be placed in spots were the signal is good about Half way to the dead spots.

How many WDS units are needed? It depends on your specific environment (that is a good the reason to buying WDS units one at the time, try it, and decide on the Next step).
