Extending wireless 2

I didn't want to hijack the other thread about extending wireless, but I've got a question about extending my wireless. I've got my router hooked up to my modem in one end of the house. I want to extend (or boost?) my wifi signal on the other end of the house so I can stream movies to my projector outdoors with better signal. I have an old wrt54g laying around and was thinking of using it to act as an access point or a boost (not sure of the terminology here). My question is, does the wrt54g need to be hardwired to the network? Or will it pick up the wireless signal from the first router and then transmit it? Reason I'm asking is because 1 side of my house is wired, the other half isn't.

It would likely need to be hardwired, but even then a wrt54g is going to be slow streaming movies. You probably need something newer to stream big files.

It can do it if you flash DD-WRT to it, and configure it in Repeater mode. Whether it would provide enough performance is another question entirely, since repeater/WDS modes halve the effective bandwidth.

Ok. Well if it's not going to do the job I'll just abandon the project and try to fig. out how to get wiring to this side of the house.
