I have finally convinced my parents the issue with the internet is that ancient router they are using. Their router is located in the basement. They have a very nice deck and pool outside and the internet is essentially useless. Even in the same room of the router is abysmal, like 2Mbps bad. They are paying for around 10Mbps. If I lived in the area I would set them up with a Ubiquiti system but I am now four states away so that isn't happening. Where the router is and the outdoor area is essentially directly on top of each other. I am inclined to believe moving to a modern router will give acceptable performance. Some light video streaming would be nice but just being able to browse the best is an improvement over what they have. Something long the lines of an Archer C7 is what I am looking at. Pretty cheap but solid performance. They have zero need for high end AC or anything fancy. Just wanted to pick the brain trust here to see if a wireless extender is needed or would even help. Thanks guys/gals.
I have recommended moving the router upstairs and am awaiting a response to that.
