extending the life of my c2d e6400. wanting to over clock so i need a new cooler.

I'm planning on getting some extra life out of my gaming rig by getting 4gb of ddr2-800 ram, a new video card and over clocking my e6400 with a asus p5w DH mobo.

I can get the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 for 27 bucks at superbiiz.com of the tuniq tower 120 for $50 at new egg. Which would be best for the buck? I hear the ACF7 can oc this cpu to around 3.2ghz... how much more could i get out of the tuniq tower and would it be worth the extra $20? or is there something better in the same price bracket?

Also, I have some artic silver 5 I used 2 or 3 years ago when I built my rig... would that go bad after these years? I just pulled it out and it still seems to be a liquid... Should I use it or just get more? also whats the difference between artic silver 5 and Arctic Silver Ceramique?

i dont know about bang for buck but i can tell you if i was building a new computer id go with the tuniq again. Regardless of price. My temps are so low............

I would remove the mobo & all parts, clean and rebuild from scratch when you goto install the new HSF and GPU. The AC7 is a great cooler and cools to near the range of the Tuniq. I would use the Artic silver you have, and personally I would lap the base of the new heatsink and the IHS. That would help the temps stay down, and give you more Ocing room. I'd pick up a $180 HD4890 or GTX275 for your gpu, since the 975X isn't a great chipset for crossfiring and sli isn't an option. If you do want two cards, I would get some cheap 4830's, 4770's or 4850's for $89/ea. You might even get 1 4890 now, and a second a year from now. Sell off your old parts. Your E6400 is probably going to land somewhere in the range of 3.05-3.45Ghz when all's said & done. Not much difference in the AS5 & ceramique... maybe a degree or two (minimal impact compared to other factors like technique/mounting/lapping/airflow/vcore/etc.)

Your E6400 is still a quite competitive CPU @ 3.4ghz. Good luck.

I ran my e6400 @ 3.2Ghz with Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro just fine. For not much money, check out the Scythe Mugen 2 if you have room for it.

hmm, so would the AC7 be a better buy at 25 bucks instead of a tunic tower at 50 bucks? The higher I can OC the better i guess. I think i might buy new artic silver since its only like 5 bucks... rather not take a chance on the old stuff. As for air flow, i think im good... 2 80mm fans on the back, one on top, one on the front and one 120mm fan on the side.

What exactly is lapping and IHS? Im kinda new to OCing with aftermarket coolers. If anyone has a good link to a OC guide that would be helpful too.

BTW, i ordered a 4890 for $180 after MIR.

lapping IHS = sanding the top of the processor to a mirror shine, removing the layer of zinc down the copper. It makes the uneven surface flat, and reduces the need for thermal compound. If the bottom of the Heat sink and the top of the IHS(internal heat spreader) are both shiny, flat and copper, then the heat transfer is more efficient - thus making the processor's core temperature lower (usually 4 to 8 degrees) during load.

Edit: I am going to go with the ACF7. I found an opened item on Newegg for $14 so thats a pretty good price! I also checked out my old Arctic silver 5... it still seems good so i'll use that.
