Extending the life of an older PC

To all,

I have an *old* Gateway 700S PC that I?m trying to extend the life on a little bit longer. Its uses RAMBUS RIMM PC800 memory modules and an AGP interface for the video card.

I plan on upgrading the memory to a couple of 512mb modules I?ll get off of eBay (for a total of 1gb).

My question is on the video card.

Can I use any AGP video card in this machine? I see a lot of 4x and 8x AGP cards but I don?t know if that ?X? designation makes them incompatible with my machine. The video card in it now is an NVidia MX400 64mb card and I want to upgrade to a 256mb card so I can support a wide screen display at 1680 x 1050. (The original 18? LCD monitor is toast and I have a spare Gateway 20? widescreen I want to use in its place.)

This PC is not a gaming PC at all; in fact, it?s nothing more than an access point to get on the internet. I just want to get a little more use out of it is all.

Suggestions please? Thanks in advance.

most any modern card can do wide screen 1680x1050, even lower end agp😉
the mx400 should be fine at such a resolution actually.
now if you get a 30" 2560x1600 then its upgrade time😉

Any AGP video card will work. X4 and X8 cards are compatible with X4 or X8 slots, they just offer different amounts of bandwidth. Also, I'm pretty sure Oroo is right; the MX400 with 64MB of RAM should be able to output 1680x1050 @ 32-bit colors.
