I have a Dell Inspiron 3200 laptop, with a 266 p2, which has been dropped enough times, that its not very portable anymore, so it has been sitting next to my desk as another computer, but i got bored one day and took it apart, and had an idea. Id love to put it in my car as an mp3 player, and i figured out how to fit everything (old ibm 84 key keyboard with built in trackpoint on top of armrest, laptop under seat, new clarion head unit with aux inputs), and how im gonna run the cables, except for the lcd. It has these wierd connectors that i doubt i could find the connectors to anywhere, so i had an idea that i would extend them, by cutting em in half, buying some 15 pair cable from jameco ( here), strip the ends, and heatshrink it on, but would this cause any problems for sync and other stuff? I know laptop lcds run digital, so if it fails, it fails, its not like just the colors would be screwed up. The cables comming out of the lcd are long enough that i think if it didnt work, i could reattach them and theyd still work, but if theres no chance of this working, i wont bother, and ill find some way to mount the entire computer somewhere in the car. Id only have to add on 1.5 to 2 feet, and id be willing to buy some more expensive multipair cable if that stuff isnt good enough quality, if you have any suggestions. here are some pictures i took of the 2 connectors (the long one is a 1x20 which caires the display, the stubby one is a 2x5 which caries the inverter power) Theyre fairly large, and i dont wnat clutter the page with pictures. Im more woried about the display than the inverter, and figuring out how to strip the display wires since theyre so thin, maybe some punchdown type of thing like network keystone jacks use, because im afaid id end up pulling the conductor if i stripped em.
