Does anyone know of any good tricks to extend a car rental for a few hours without having to pay for an extra day?

I secured a car on Priceline, but only for a day, when I actually need the car for about 27 hours. I doubt they will just give me the pro-rata rate for three hours, or even only charge me what I paid for the day I've purchased.

You will be paying for 1 day rate + 3 hours rate (will end up being pretty close if not the same as 1 day rate). Car companies used to be lenient enough to allow an extra hour, but that changed a few years ago. Now, some companies charge for any overtime immediately; others may grant you a half-hour leeway. Keep in mind you are already paying a discounted rate; car companies are more flexible for their best customers.

When it's time to return the car just tell them you're running late. I've done it before and they didn't charge me for an extra date - just prorated. YMMV though.

Where I work, you can't do this. Car rentals are on a 24-hour period. There's no trick that will work because you're rental agent has probably heard it all. Most if not all of the rental places here in Canada operate like that. Discount, Budget, Enterprise. I'm not sure about the US though.

It's just how our head office has it set up in the computer. The counter reps don't have a lot of leeway regarding time. Someone else may have the car booked after you too. Then we're pulling our hair out because some douche is yelling at us because they have to wait five minutes. Ruins my day. Some may do half days like we do on our trucks. You usually get an hour's grace too.

I suggest calling their call centre and asking about specials. Depends on what you're renting and when you're renting it. If it's something like a compact, economy, or mid-size they'll probably have something. Minivans, SUVs, and fullsize cars are tight right now (family vacation season) so they cost more to rent. A lot of places offer weekend specials. If you're auto insurance or credit card has rental coverage, that's another way to save some money. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. We're not in the habit of trying to screw people.

The last time I rented a car (Bay Area, CA) and needed a few extra hours, the agent was pretty up front about after a few hours of full-rate late charges it was cheaper to keep the car another full day. This is especially true if you are getting a good discount rate to begin with.

depending on how you're renting, an extra hour might cost more than you paid to rent the car for a day.

1) don't rent from an airport and 2) make the reservation online, and two days will be cheap.
