Ok, Don't want to do entire rebuild as I am a newbie. I want to give the gaming rig a little more ummph to last a year or two more before I go for my next ulitmate build and go liquid cool.

I would like to:

1. go up to Win 7 and run the 64 bit
2. replace current RAM to maximum amount that 64 bit can see (and maybe DDR3 ram if my MB can take it)
3. new processor (don't want to or feel comfortable overclocking)
4. best video card that the rest of the pc can keep up with

It sounds like your current system is pretty good. An 8800GTX with a Q6600 is no slouch. I personally would wait until you can build your ultimate build. Is there anything you can't do with your current system?

No current system is good and I am happy with it. But I have a small business and CPA said to buy more equipment so I can get better tax deduction for 2009 using section 179.

So I use my gaming computer to do a little work and if I got audited my gaming computer would be up at the office.

Just have money to spend.

I don't know that it's worth it, even with a deduction. For a free solution, you have some nice components for overclocking. Pay for solutions, I think you'd be throwing money away. You have enough ram, and adding more won't really get you much for performance. Maybe I'm overlooking it, but I don't see what gfx card you have.

1) Okay. FYI Windows 7 Home Premium can handle up to 16GB, while Basic can only do 8GB and Starter only 2GB. All higher editions of Windows 7 can do 128GB.

2) You have a 680i chipset motherboard so you will be limited to DDR2. One option you have is to upgrade the motherboard as well, to something that can still take your Q6600 CPU but that can also take DDR3. This way when you upgrade in the future you can keep using that DDR3. Most dual channel DDR3 boards can do up to 16GB RAM.

3) This will be a problem. The 680i chipset boards usually had problems with 45nm CPUs, especially quad cores. If you are wanting new RAM and a new CPU, you may as well get a new motherboard as well, since even if your motherboard could handle a 45nm quad core, socket 775 quads were limited to 3.2GHz Extreme Editions which are really expensive, or 3GHz Q9650 which are still pricey and slower than the chips on newer sockets. I would recommend at this point to go socket 1156 if you're more on a budget, or socket 1366 if you have a higher budget and know you want tons of RAM.

4) If you stick with Nvidia you will want a GTX 260 or higher as those are a decent amount faster than your 8800 GTX. If you want to go ATI you should look into the 5770/5850. It also depends on your budget. One unknown at this time is the upcoming high end cards from Nvidia. If you really need to spend on this calendar year you may want to buy a BFG or EVGA card as those companies have trade-up programs where if a new card comes out in the next 3 months you can trade in your card for the amount of money you paid for it put towards a new card. People have been known to get free upgrades (plus cost of shipping).

One unknown factor is your power supply. Some of the new video cards and CPUs can use more power than the ones you currently have, so you may want to look into whether you need to budget for that as well. If you can just open up your side panel and get the brand/model, we might be able to make some recommendations or give our blessings to what you already have.

SO my new thinking is to update vista to Win 7 64 bit. So the 64 bit will see more of the Ram I have. Currently I have 4 gigs ram but Vista can only see like 2.7


And to update to a newer graphics card. I am looking at this card.

I am updating my graphics card and my OS to win 7

Backing up all my data (mp3, pictures) to two different USB hard drives. Plus have the date saved online through MOZY.

I am going to put the new OS on the C drive.

Question is, my D drive , where I dump all my pictures and mp3 can I just leave the data on there when I install WIN 7 to the C drive? Or should I unplug the hard drive. Then once I have Win 7 going I can plug in the hard drive.

Will Win 7 recognize all the data?

Hum, I can't find my COD MW2 folders to copy my player data before I Install WIN 7.

Under :\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4

COD4 is under activision but not COD MW2

Is the player filer under STEAM ?
