Ext. Hard Drive wrong size..

Hello,
I had an external 20GB harddrive (connected via firewire) I just bought a new 80GB Western Digital drive and installed it. Now in Partion magic and Computer Managment the computer is detecting it as a 127.99GB hard drive. And I cannot format it. I get errors that it cannot be formatted when I try or the program freezes. I am running XP pro. I checked and the HD is a 80GB. So what can I do. I have the HD set up as master? Does it need to be cable select or slave?
Any ideas?

id try and connect it via an ide port, format it and get it all set up and then retry the external.
This should at least eliminate the external as the source of the prb.
