[Expreview] Nvidia GT 740

http://www.expreview.com/33607.html

They have got hands on 2 GT 740's. One uses a 6 pin connector and one doesn't.

They have not disclosed an details as yet about Core count, etc.

Because of the 6pin connector, I guess Nvidia is selling GT 650's as the GT 740. The version without the 6pin is probably like the ASUS GT650 E (without 6pin).

Unless it is a 384 core Maxwell, but then there would be no need for the power connector because 640 core Maxwell doesn't require one.

So it's most probably 384 core Kepler

Memory is 128bit 1GB GDDR5

The naming scheme on cards is crackers. These constant rebrands and mixing of model number and performance is really confusing. The Maxwell card should never have been the 750, they should have called it the 850. Filling in the bottom 700 series with a low end Kepler and all the rebrands like the 770 and 760, its just confusing. They have been doing this for a long time and I really wish they would just stop.

With a 128 bit interface this is most definitely kepler. There is a GM208 with 384 shader cores but this chip only has a 64 bit memory interface. It is possible that this is a cut down GM107 but this is unlikely.

Yeah, Nvidia should have kept 7xx for Kepler rebrands.
8xx should have been a new start with Maxwell.
Might be all the upcoming Maxwells will have a slightly refreshed architecture?

Maxwell is unlikely because of the power. Anything less than 512 core Maxwell wouldn't require a power connector.
