Yes this probably should go in P&N, but I think I have a better chance of getting non-flaming responses over here ;)

CNN ran something on global warming tonight, basically they seem to be telling us to calm down and relax for a minute. They're not saying that it isn't happening (that's obvious to everyone), but they're saying that we can't really do that much about it, and we're a lot better off spending our money on AIDS, malaria, and the like, instead of going around screaming "Oh noes, teh global warmings!!1!!! like silly spastic children.

For example, they've noted that in the '70s everyone was going crazy about global cooling, and their consensus seems to be that we really can't do anything significant about it, and probably don't need to (ie. it's just a cycle that the Earth has been going through for all of history). Granted, I haven't seen the thing all the way through yet, but from what I have seen (and the obvious title), I'm not expecting them to be playing devil's advocate.

Cliffs:
CNN doesn't deny global warming
they say the world really isn't going to explode
and we need to relax
and probably can't do too much to fix it anyway
and greenhouse gases are getting more than their fair share of the blame

Thoughts/comments?

Blasphemy, this must have been on Fox News!:p

The most relevant piece of this is that 30-35yrs ago all of the scientists really did think the earth was cooling and that we would be thrust into eskimo suits and all learning how to ice fish.

Really makes you think that they have no clue as to waht the fvck they are reporting on. I see this as the full employment act of climate scientoligists as they are getting tons of research grants.

Stupid CNN. Sensationalism brings in the mindless viewers. This stuff can't help their ratings.

Saying "we're all going to be fine" is sensationalism?

...*sigh*

I just wrote a newspaper article on global warming saying pretty much the exact same thing. A little bit of research goes a long ways.

Remember SARS, Y2K, the bird flu? Global warming is just next in line, hopefully to be dropped soon.

I keep recycling the following, but it is just as true as when I first wrote it:

When I was in school, I learned about the impending Ice Age (no, not the movie).
My kids will learn about the impending Global Warming.
I guess my grandkids will learn about the impending Ice Age again.

Reminds me of the line from 1984: "We are at war with Oceana, we have always been at war with Oceana." Except, that we have not always been at war with Oceana, and we have not and will not always be at risk of Global Warming. Wait a few years and we can all fear an Ice Age again.
