exposé malfunctioning

i have an '07 Intel imac (running latest version of Leopard, not Snow Leopard) and exposé feature (or something like it) keeps getting activated when ONLY USING THE MOUSE.

at certain times, it has gone into hyperactive mode, where the screen starts rapidly switching between exposé and normal view

any ideas what might be causing this?

Could a key on your keyboard be stuck though? (or malfunctioning)?

or maybe you have hot corners set up? so when you go off to a corner it activates expose?

All good ideas:

I had a spare mac keyboard and tried switching it out: same thing.

Hot corners was a good idea too, especially since it seemed to be mouse-related, but it was disabled.

It did make me notice however, that mouse button 4 was set to activate expose. I never use mouse button 4 (in fact I forgot it existed), but it seems that was what was accidentally activating expose.
