The Sun ate at taco bell...

(And yes... a direct burst would release intense amounts of solar radiation and ionized particles. You'd have a wonderful light show from the northern lights (that would extend WAY south), and possible heavy and prolonged interruption of radio communications of various sorts.)

This is the sort of thing I was really wondering about. I mean, that explosion was many times the size of the Earth itself.

maybe they will leave us alone and just study us from a distance.

That was real time?

Looking at the timestamp in the video, no. It looks like from start to finish it's a couple hours. Mostly depending on what you call "finish".
