Just did a win2k clean install, first time I have this problem. stupid piece of crap explorer keeps freezing up for no reason and starts using 100% of the cpu, I have to reboot every freaken time. Really annoying. Only thing I did different is join it to a domain, but it was joined about a week before the clean install, so it's not that.

Whatcha got for...

hardware firewall?

software firewall?

antivirus?

Service Pack level and the subsequent Update Rollup 1 + the other ~18 patches?

strong passwords on Admin-class accounts?

Also, so are you saying the system's networked to a domain? or that it was on a domain, but not any more? If the latter, then what is it networked to now?

I joined the domain (linux based) about a week before I did the clean install, so after the clean install I joined it again. The firewall does not block any netbios related stuff. It prompts me whenever something needs to come in or go out, so any windows related stuff I letted through and made a rule for it.

I'm afraid I'm still not clear on the answers to most of my questions

These things don't really matter since it's been this way since day 1, and it only started doing this till now, and it's not my first clean install.

hardware firewall?
Router

software firewall?
Tiny personal firewall

antivirus?
AVG free

Service Pack level and the subsequent Update Rollup 1 + the other ~18 patches?
SP4 installed

strong passwords on Admin-class accounts?
yes

This is all security related, so really don't know why explorer would screw up because of that.

Because worms sometimes inject themselves into explorer.exe, that was my motivation for asking about the security aspect. Sounds like you're doing great on the security aspects, though.

This may be a stupid question but did you rename the computer after the clean install or name it the same as before?

Trying to attach to the network and/or mapping drives may be causing a lot of extensive handshaking. Explorer may be attempting to setup the connections and not getting the proper responses.

You may wish to post this problem also in the networking forum.

Check for spyware. Spyware made half of my IE windows crash. When does this happen, specifically? It's almost certainly sending stuff to the broadcast (x.x.x.255) and hung up in an infinite loop waiting for a response. The timeout is probably something insane.

It's not viruses or spyware, I'm a level 3 computer tech, and would never manage to get any of that, especially not on a clean install. Accidents do happen of course, but given the circumstances I know it's not that.

The computer name stayed the same. Another problem I'm getting is that all the shares keep getting an X on them and I have to "refresh" them. I decided to dump the domain idea hoping it would solve that issue, but it did not. And sometimes even double clicking the Xed share won't work since it says it's already in use, which makes no sense. This only happends if I try to map a share on the same letter as another, or something similar. This whole clean install is just falling apart on me but redoing it is not an option as I already configured my email, which takes long in it's own... I have tons of accounts.

Oh and the freezup usually happends near startup, but sometimes it will go for long, then I'll be doing something and click too fast, then boom, again. the desktop goes black and the icons go white, and I have to shut explorer off then back on, or reboot. Oh and I don't use IE at all. I actually have firefox setup on my network to avoid IE altogether. I did install 6.0 though as it's required by msn.
