explorer not launching at startup

WinXP Pro SP2 machine. Had some viruses and such before which were all cleaned off. About 2 days later, explorer.exe stops running at startup. I can run it manually and everything works fine. Checked for viruses and it still comes up clean. Registry entry for shell is still there. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP2, but no change.

Any ideas? I'd rather not have to format reinstall.

Couldn't wait any longer, nothing I was trying was working and I had to get the machine up and running so I just re-imaged it.

Still curious if anybody has any ideas though.
