Explorer.exe takes up 99% of my cpu???

ARG i'm going crazy. Just reinstalled windows XP, downloaded the update, but this problem still occurs.

It happens when I browse my files with explorer, or play movies for instance - suddenly
everything slows down, and I can't do anything, the start-bar also freezes. I can only change
between programs with alt+tab, and these function very slowly, and most of the times InternetExplorer will
be in "Not Responding" mode.

When I press ctrl+alt+delete, I can see that explorer.exe uses 99% of my cpu power - I then close it down, and
run it again with "new task"; and everything is back to normal.

Anybody who can help?

(i installed via 4in1 4.37 btw)

<< play movies >>

They wouldn't happen to have been divx movies, would they?

I have this same problem, and have yet to find a solution. Happens with DivX and Pr0n. So I know it's not a DivX only problem.

I've noticed the problem, and the only way I found to avoid it was to make sure to hit "stop" in whatever program is playing the movie, before closing the player.

As for it happening when you're browsing, I might guess it has something to do with the way explorer gets information from the files (possibly a simulated access...)

*note*
I just tried browsing a video folder right now, without having the divx codec installed, and magically explorer shot up. I separated the avi files from the other videos, other folder worked normally, the divx folder sent explorer up again. I am also noticing that explorer is "stuck" trying to get the running time of one file. That's where I'd guess the problem is when browsing.

do U still have all avi's associated with media player? maybe its trying to preview the movie and is screwing up... take off the association of avis from media player, make it the playa or whatever only.
