"explorer.exe" error

Well here we go, trying to help relatives. Can't get system up cause after it runs virus it tries to open Explorer. Since there is a problem with that program nothing else opens and that's it. This is Win98 on Hewlit Pack. My thougt is to copy this file to a floppy and get it from floppy to hard with DOS.

Is this a good idea, and if so, does anyone know the exact command line?

Thank you for your support!

Had a similar problem on an HP machine recently. I ended up renaiming the Windows directory from "DOS" and reinstalling Windows. The machine is now working and we didn't lose any files.

As Someone who used to do thier Tech Support I will save you the LD Charges and tell you what they will tell you.If you are using an Hp, use the recovery CD #1 and take recovery only in the option list. It will reinstall windows and all the programs your Hp came with however it won't erase any data or adjust any settings. Also their is a way to extract that one file off the recovery CD but I can't remember the command, It is under Advanced options usually. Finally if you can boot to Dos and feel comfortable using the Extract command you can extract explorer.exe from the appropiate cab file. Hp always copies the Windows CD into the Directory C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\. I suggest the above as it is usually the least involved and effortless way to fix this problem, However their are other solutions that are porbably quicker.

Dazed

thanks to all. I'll try the HP recovery idea, though the system is not picking up the cd on start up. worse comes to worse I'll reformat. They are already set for losing everything, but from what I can tell, from listening to all of you, at other threads too, is that I shouldn't have to reformat. I'd like to learn this right.

Any other ideas?

Wow Dexman, Before you do anything rash..

Go to a clean comp and use a virus checker to make one of those virus checking boot floppies..

Write protect them then use them on the infected system.

put explorer(make sure its the same version as the one on the hp!) on a floppy and copy it to the now virus free hp with the command "cp explorer.exe c:\windows"

Restart and cross your fingers!

If that little fix fails then re-format!

thanks Evolution!!
this is exactly what I was looking for. I bet with your idea I have this thing running tonight. I already have the file copied (same version-thank you)on floppy. I needed the command line and the virus tip.

We'll let ya know how it works!

Well, about the virus check. I'm on a NT now with Norton 5.0 and can't seem to figure out how to create a floppy. Can you help? I have to catch Norton at start up or of I wait and just try to open it give me a dump!!
