explorer.exe dies on startup (XP Pro SP2)

So, I had to reboot my computer tonight, and when it came back up, it was quite hosed. Explorer.exe dies almost immediately after login, leaving me with a very crippled OS. Trying to find info or do anything is quite difficult in this condition...

- tried "last known good", no dice
- tried restarting explorer.exe, dies immediately
- tried system file checker, but don't have an XP Pro SP2 cd around (no other computers with burners, and I'm not sure this one is functional enough to create the slipstreamed CD)
- tried all safe mode configs - process dies there, as well
- tried all local accounts - process dies for all of them

Troubleshooting windows from the command line is not a great strength of mine, so any input/suggestions would be appreciated...

I'd try to reinstall internet explorer. It's tied very closely to explorer.exe and may resolve the issue.

Insert your windows cd and enter the following command:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

I get an "install failed" error immediately upon running that command...

Try doing a repair install. You'll have to install updates again if it works. If not... either restore a backup or do a clean install.
