Explorer.exe crashes and restarts over and over, unable to run any programs

I did the auto update, that was just released. after the reboot, windows XP is now all screwed up. After the machine boots, the start menu keeps reloading, it looks as if explorer.exe keeps crashing and restarting. I am unable to run any programs. I tried to boot in safe mode, but the same thing happens there as well. Is anybody experiencing the same thing?

Running
AMD 64 3400+
MSI mother board
Winxp SP2
1 gig ram

Something like this happened to me about 2 weeks ago. The only solution that worked was to reinstall XP. Tried system restore and an XP repair but none of them worked.

do you encrypt your files on your NTFS partition? if yes, and you haven't made a backup of your key, then probably yes.
Otherwise, to be on the safe side, put hdd into another system, copy files you want, format and re-install - not the quickest way, but maybe the safest and most efficient in the long run

Remove (Uninstall, via add-remove control panel) DIVX and any other applications that add icons or features to the right-click menu. Reboot. See if the problem went away.
