explorer.exe causing interval graphic stutter

I have tried every possible way to fix my graphic stuttering. Changed out cpu, vid card, memory, set my OCs to default levels, installed/uninstalled video drivers. I also did a Windows XP Pro installation that just overwrites the files. Still didn't work. I did a clean install, it worked for a little bit. I have also uninstalled all the software that i installed afterwards, still nothing. The only way to take these graphic stutters out is if I delete the explorer.exe process and just run my games/benchmarks without it. I have up to date drivers in all my hardware. DirectX 9.0b, Catalyst 3.7, WinXP SP1, everything updated and I still can't figure it out. Liked I said it worked fine after a fresh install.

I also have McAfee virus scanner 7.0 with updated virus engine. The explorer would spike to around 5% usage of the cpu and thats where the stutters come from in my games. I wish I knew what it was doing so I can fix it.

Any opinions/suggestions would be helpful as I have ran out of them myself.

I have my antivirus disabled while gaming. Have you tried that?

Yea I have done that.. I even have deleted all the non-system processes and watched explorer.exe through task manager alone.. and it would spike to around 5%.. those spikes are causing my lag in games and make me die.. 🙁

I have WinXP Pro.. i dont know if that makes a difference?

It could be spyware too. If I get a bunch of that it'll screw up my gaming. I install a list of spyware domains to my exploer restricted sites list that blocks all bad cookies, and run adaware and spybot. Here's the list.
And the Tweaktown XP guide may have some helpful operating optimization for you.

Im just thinking about re-installing XP and seeing what it is that makes it do that

Before you do that try Startup Control Panel and EndItAll 2. Between the two of them, you should be able to narrow your search a lot faster than doing another install, by turning off certain apps from running in the background, and then trying.
