Explorer.exe = 90-99% CPU! WinXP Pro

Hey all,

I just upgraded my box with some new toys and now after doing a clean format (this box is about 7 days old) I've noticed that explorer.exe starts to eat all the cpu cycles after doing some explorer sessions (windows explorer or ie6).

Box:
ACPI (originally used to be standard pc, did system fix via boot cd to install acpi; standard pc was yielding same effect)
TekRam 390F (window drivers, i'll update this next)
Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 (23.11 not overclocked, AGP 4x)
512MB PC2100 Crucial @ CL2
AMD XP 1600+ (not overclocked; using windows update drivers; alpha8045 AS2)
(4) 7200 RPM IDE HDs (could be that i have it mixed w/ WDs and Maxtors?)
Plextor 40x ultra / Plextor 8x20 cd-r (both scsi)
Abit KR7A non-raid 6n bios
SB! X-Gamer 5.1 (windows update drivers)
NetGear FA310TX (win intel generic drivers; wont let me manually update to netgear's drivers)
Pinnacle Studio PCTV Pro (generic drivers; normal wont record with PowerVCR II)
Intelli Explorer 3.0 (Intelli 4.0 drivers)
Wacom Tablet
Antec 403x PSU (400W, AMD Certified)

updated everything from windows update and installed Q313675 IE6 patch
used 4in1 patch
via ide update
via 4.10 agp update

I installed everything the same way i would on my old box
Duron 800@1050
KT7A
512MB PC100 @ CL2
Prophet II GeForce 2 GTS 64mb DDR AGP 4x
everything else is the same as above but never ever experienced this explorer.exe cpu hogging

Thanks for any suggestions

current possible culprits:

primary master WD / primary slave Maxtor
secondary master WD / secondary slave Maxtor (something like that, i know they're mixed)

using generic drivers w/ tv card

not making system acpi complient from the getgo (hit F5 during fresh install to make it 'standard pc')

virus norton 2002 cant detect (i'll check the normal reg entries if something is loading w/ explorer)

dont think it's any specific software since this was happening almost from the start

7 days, time for a good format anyways 😛

it seems that i found one way to recreate the problem 100% and that's to go into a DiVX folder with incomplete or bad files. if i close the folder explorer keeps chomping away at 90-99%

OMG! I think this is it (at least one of them)
Fix

hell yez

Thanks poopio

<< I found the fix! here's the entire thing:

The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire
contents of
broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad
behavior of shmedia.dll.

This problem manifests itself by causing Explorer to read the entire
contents
of an AVI file, regarless of its size or location any time the mouse
pointer
is hovered over it, or an attempt is made to access it in windows
explorer.

This causes 'permission denied' errors when trying to simply move,
copy or
delete these files as they cannot be changed while Explorer has an
open handle
on them.

This also causes a DoS situation where large AVI's are stored on
remote shares and Explorer keeps reading the files from beginning to
end each time they are accessed.

To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to
file property queries on these files.

This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes,
>>

anyone know how he figured that out? i tried using filemon and regmon but never noticed shmedia.dll
